Lift-and-Shift Migration of HCommons for MSU

Tgix executed a seamless migration of the Humanities Commons site for MSU, enabling a secure, scalable infrastructure with minimal downtime.

Humanities Commons is an open-access, nonprofit online network at the Michigan State University that connects humanities scholars, writers, researchers, and students across disciplines – providing professional profiles, group discussions, publishing tools, and a shared open repository.

CHALLENGE

The Humanities Commons web infrastructure needed to be migrated from the Modern Language Association’s AWS environment to MSU’s new AWS account with minimal disruption and maintaining the existing IP addressing schema.

SOLUTION

Tgix undertook meticulous planning and coordination, identifying all components (EC2, RDS, VPC, security groups, IAM roles) and gathering MSU’s specific requirements. A detailed architecture was developed for security, scalability, and availability, including operational plans for downtime, rollback, backup, and DR. Implementation involved setting up multiple VPCs across multiple Availability Zones using AWS CloudFormation templates. EC2 instances were migrated via AMIs, and RDS instances via manual snapshots, along with configuration of ALBs, ElastiCache, Elasticsearch, IAM, security groups, and WAF rules.

RESULTS

The migration was successful with minimal disruption and downtime, ensuring high availability, fault tolerance, and improved security. Tgix provided detailed documentation and conducted knowledge transfer sessions with MSU’s IT team.
